‘Twas the Night Before Signing Day

‘Twas the night before Signing Day, when all through the town, not a fan was pessimistic, not even a frown.

The letters were ready in the office with care, in hopes that more recruits soon would be there.

Young Jayhawks were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of Kansas football played in their heads.

And mamma in her jersey, and I in my cap, had just settled down for a long winter’s nap.

When out in the stadium there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-shiny practice field, gave the luster of hope that did not plan to crash or yield.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a big time football coach, and his full staff coming near.

More rapid than eagles his team they all came, and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

“Now, Lindsey! now, Drake! now, Eliot and Jones! On, Chevis! on Hull! on, Bowen and Meadows!

We’re off to recruit and to sign some new players!” And away they all flew bundled up in their KU gear layers.

But I heard Les Miles exclaim, as they disappeared out of sight.

“HAPPY SIGNING DAY TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD ROCKCHALK-NIGHT!”
