Seasoned Veteran Coming to KU

Late last week Kansas received some great news. David Beaty made a big time hire in bringing in Bill Miller as Linebackers Coach, who is a defensive coach veteran. He has an impressive list of coaches he’s worked under such as Nick Saban, Jerry Kill, Jimbo Fisher, Mark Mangino, Jimmy Johnson, and Butch Davis. He’s also known for his recruiting prowess in Florida which is a big market for college football recruiting.

What can we expect Miller to bring to KU? Let’s take a look at some of his stats…

I only included points against per game and total defense just to get a quick overall picture of how he’s done. But honestly, other than a few blips, I think it’s impressive. His defense has finished in the top 50 12 of his 28 years coaching defense. For a little perspective Kansas hasn’t finished in the top 50 in the last ten years.

And I think where Miller will help most is with current Kansas DC Clint Bowen. He has a lot of experience and success and I think Bowen could use a guy to point him in the right direction.

Clint Bowen 2006 – Current

Team Year Position Opp Pts/G Total Defense Rank
Kansas 2006 Co-DC/Safeties 25.5 (81st of 119) 94th of 119
Kansas 2007 Co-DC/Safeties 16.4 (4th of 120) 12th of 120

North Texas 2011 Defensive Coordinator 30.7 (88th of 120) 97th of 120
Kansas 2012 Safeties/Special Teams 36.1 (112th of 124) 113th of 124
Kansas 2013 Linebackers Coach 31.8 (94th of 125) 96th of 125
Kansas 2014 DC/Linebackers 33.2 (106th of 128) 106th of 128
Kansas 2015 Associate HC/DC/S 46.1 (128th of 128) 128th of 128
Kansas 2016 Associate HC/DC/S 37.3 (114th of 128) 109th of 128
Kansas 2017 Associate HC/DC/S 43.4 (129th of 130) 117th of 130

As you can see, Bowen hasn’t done well running the defense at Kansas. Under his watch KU’s defenses have been pretty close to the bottom, aside from 2007 (the year they won the Orange Bowl) where Bill Young was DC.

I like to think that Bowen has potential, especially under the right coach. And I think Beaty did a smart thing by bringing in Miller to give him that bit of knowledge and push that he needs.

And at the end of the day Bowen is a Lawrence native and a Jayhawk through and through, so if a guy like Bill Miller can come in and groom him, that could set Kansas up for the future.
